From our modest beginnings 40 years ago with our Founder, Ghean Maksimow (the original “Bow Genie”), Bow Genie has developed into America’s premier handcrafted bow manufacturer.
Decades of hand tying bows has taught us how to perfect many styles of bows for the floral industry, wreath makers, the gift packaging industry, and special events.
Many of our bow makers have remained with us since our beginning!
Ghean Maksimow — the original “Bow Genie” — started the company with a simple, stubborn belief that a bow should be made by hand. She met Walter Sr. at LA’s Intercontinental Hotel through connections with Gene Autry, and together, after training with The John Henry Company, they launched OffShore Manufacturing.
An early breakthrough came fast: an order for 350,000 florist bows for Safeway supermarkets. Filling it meant training more than 100 workers and expanding operations almost overnight.
After the 2009 financial crisis and the loss of the factory lease, Ghean bought new land while Walter Jr. hand-built the facilities in Tecate. He and Patricia — his wife and Head Designer — kept the doors open on minimal salary until the company was reborn as Bow Genie in late 2012.
Since 2014 the focus on holiday bows has grown the business to well over 50,000 units a season, with commissions from Estée Lauder and Kate Spade and a World War I Centennial memorial wreath-bow project for all 50 states.
